WSU School of Social Work Partners with BABES, Students Receive Free Training

By: Crystal Mayo, BABES Special Projects/Media

Over the past 40 years, BABES has trained groups of individuals Basic BABES (Pk-5) across 50 states and four countries representing a range of cultural diversity inclusive of various professions and backgrounds, all of whom sharing one commonality. Besides an interest to learn the BABES philosophy of teaching young children to live healthy, happy lives free of alcohol and other drugs, there is (and still is) unequivocal curiosity relative to the role that the BABES puppets play and their impact on reaching and teaching their young audience. In 1996, Detroit won an implementation grant to improve the health and safety of its youth and to create “systems change” or, to establish “lasting change” in policy funding and procedures of various Institutions. The Youth Connection was identified as an organization to provide after-school programs and activities that would be accessible with a mandate of reaching 75% of Detroit’s youth. BABES Celebrates Evidence-Based Status

By: Crystal Mayo, BABES Special Projects and Media Specialist

It was the news that BABES’ CEO and Founder Reverend Dr. Lottie Jones Hood had been waiting for – that SPEC Associates had analyzed both the Program and Comparison Groups’ classroom data and it was proven that the BABES Program could be certified as Evidence-Based.

*”SPEC Associates (Social Program Evaluators and Consultants), Inc., concluded that BABES K-3rd grade curriculum meets the criteria for being evidence-based as set forth in SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices. The evaluation provided Class A Evidence and the evaluation evidence demonstrated an Outcome Evidence Rating of ‘effective’.”

From BABES Buddy to BABES Godparent — and just as excited about BABES as she was 27 years ago – Eizabeth McGlinn’s BABES journey started back in 1991 at the Atlantic County Council on Alcoholism in Northfield, New Jersey where she worked as a Prevention Specialist and was also a BABES Buddy. From the Mouths of BABES

It was lesson eight of BABES’ Evidence Based training for Program Group students and students were graduating – they had completed all the lessons.

Presenters Yvonne Knox and Katrina Dixon waited in the office at Hutchinson Elementary School for the bell to ring for class change. Once I walked into the office, I noticed Knox talking to a student who had apparently been sent to the office for bad behavior.

Dr. Carol Carter

One of the first things that I asked Dr. Carol Carter was “where did the name Sunshine come from – and why SUNSHINE BABES?” In an ecstatic voice full of pride, she answered, “The sun represents the heightened aspirations of man … sunshine symbolizes light, warmth and direction.”

Understandably, the sunshine can bring happiness and joy and even warm feelings of hope, but as we all know, just as the sunshine brings brightness, dreary days and dark nights can block the strongest rays of sunshine in one’s life.

In 1989, in Long Island, New York, unacquainted single moms Carter and Tamara Pelosi’s lives weren’t so sunny and bright rather, as they both recall, too often “dark and dreary.”

… And this is their story …

The Gift of BABES Keeps Giving

Article written by Crystal Mayo Babes Special Projects, Media

When BethAnne FitzPatrick called BABESWORLD Home last month inquiring about the purchase of some training videos and began to share her Babes journey, I literally got goose bumps.

I placed her call on speaker for Founder Reverend Dr. Lottie Jones Hood to listen in. Less than one minute into the conversation, I glanced over at Reverend Lottie with a reassuring look that the 40 year Babes journey is still on track and the magic of Babes is still very much alive after 17 years. Second Graders Joyously Embrace the BABES Philosophy

It may have been the morning of Halloween which was evident from the variety of costumes seen from seat-to- seat in Mama Bey’s classroom, but for this particular classroom session attention wasn’t on the evening’s candy bounty, but on the BABES presenters.

“They aren’t just excited today about the program, but they talk about it all week and are always asking when are the ‘BABES people’ coming back,” remarked Timbuktu teacher Mama Bey*. Continue reading Second Graders Joyously Embrace the BABES Philosophy

Pastor Reflects on Turning Sermon Over to BABES Puppets

At BABESWORLD some things never grow old like that April 9 th Sunday when the BABES characters actually delivered the Word before the congregation at New Bride Missionary Baptist Church on Detroit’s Eastside. Seven months later, whenever the conversation comes up, folks are (still) curious about the details, tickled at the thought of seven furry puppets at the pulpit and most are inquisitive as to what made Pastor A. Ayler make this decision. Continue reading Pastor Reflects on Turning Sermon Over to BABES Puppets
