The war against drug abuse has been prevalent for quite some time, with inner city youth being the main targets for money hungry drug dealers. In an effort to combat substance abuse in young people, Beginning Awareness Basic Education Studies (BABESWORLD) was created. A few students from Renaissance High School took advantage of the opportunity to be a part of the program.
Renaissance students Ze’Nae Williams, Chandra Flemming, Donald Bailey, Foressia Hood, and Javen Giles are excited to participate in the program as an effort to help their peers and children who will soon be in their shoes as young adults.
“It’s important to get the information across so that people can follow in the right footsteps and not take the wrong path,” said sophomore Foressia Hood.
The students cite biology teacher Ms.Newell as the one who introduced BABESWORLD to them and inspired them to partake in the program.
Animal puppets are used to create an interactive experience for the audience as a way to ensure children fully grasp the mature themes being conveyed. A few characters included in the program are Donovan Dignity, Rhonda Rabbit, and Recovering Reggie.
BABESWORLD teaches kids that range from Pre-K to 12th grade the dangers of substance abuse by using storytelling and puppets. The program also discusses other heavy hitting topics that affect young people such as pregnancy, suicide, and dropping out.
“I personally would say children in elementary school are our target audience because I think they’re most likely exposed to it but can’t do nothing about it,” said sophomore Chandra Flemming.
